This book is not about me. It is about my father, Ivan Kochan, who died at the age of 93. My father and I spent a great deal of time together in the last decade of his life. He dictated and we wrote his memoirs together. He lived at an tumultuous time in Eastern Europe, mostly Ukraine, Poland and Germany. His story tells of the struggle of Ukrainian people living innocently on their beloved land and the major battles fought there during World War 2 . Caught in the crossfire of the Nazis, the Bolsheviks and Ukraine's own nationalist factions Ivan's coming of age is unique, intense and somewhat frightening. This tale is bookended between our story; the growth of the father and daughter relationship and how it blossomed within the context of our daily writing sessions.
