The author is from the setting of the novel: a small town in northern Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama and New York University. He has been a construction worker, a river barge deckhand, fireman, casino worker, door-to-door dictionary salesman, cattle farmer and used tire mounter. Presently he is a tax lawyer in the metro Atlanta area. Formerly married and the proud father of a son four inches taller than him.
