John Ruane is an author, playwright, journalist, public relations consultant and actor. John started his career at the Chicago Sun-Times where he wrote sports and entertainment feature stories and covered the sports media. He has also written for the Chicago Tribune and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. While at the Sun-Times, he trained at The Second City Theater and went on to write and perform in four sketch revues and a rock-musical stage play, all performed in Chicago, each receiving rave reviews from critics. He also wrote a short film and television pilot, both of which won the Illinois FilmCam Award.
His career as an author began in 1994, writing an autobiography of NFL Hall of Fame legend Earl Campbell, focusing on his battle with panic disorder. The book was published by ECW Press in 1999. In 2007, his second book, Parish the Thought, was published by Simon & Schuster and generated wonderful reviews from critics across the country. In 2011, he wrote The Wizards of Spin, satire about the celebrity news media published by Second City Books. In 2018, John decided to focus his efforts on thriller novels and in April of 2021 Permuted Press published his first book in the Dylan Reilly Series titled, A Dangerous Freedom. The second book in the series, Russian Assault, will be published on September 5, 2022.
John has operated his own public relations firm, Ruane Communications, since 1998, which has greatly benefitted his ability to promote his work as an author.
On the personal side, John married his high school sweetheart, Charlotte, and they have four wonderful children and three grandchildren. He was a two-sport college athlete - hockey and baseball - and volunteered his time to coach 52 sports teams in basketball, baseball and softball over a 17-year period from beginners up to AAU and high school.
