Kirby Michael Wright was born and raised in Hawaii. He received his BA in English Literature from the University of California, San Diego. He was admitted into the MA Program in Creative Writing at San Francisco State University by Anne Rice (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE). Wright was the first student in the history of SFSU to sweep the poetry awards.
Wright has penned an incredible family saga with THE QUEEN OF MOLOKA'I, his brilliant new work of creative nonfiction based on the life and times of Julia Wright, his part-Hawaiian grandmother. Julia’s wild teenage years in Roaring Twenties Waikiki turn to heartbreak when she gives birth to two sons out of wedlock. Her mother cares for the boys in Honolulu while Julia pursues marriage on rural Moloka’i with a noncommittal cowboy. A recent review compared Wright to Pat Conroy (THE PRINCE OF TIDES) for family conflict and to Frank McCourt (ANGELA’S ASHES) for women overcoming great hardship.
Wright won the 2018 Redwood Empire Mensa Award for Creative Nonfiction. His stories and stand-alone chapters have appeared in over two hundred literary journals and magazines worldwide.
