Tanya DeVonne, a native Washingtonian, is the pen name of Tanya Ward Jordan, President and Founder of the Coalition for Change, Inc. (C4C), a civil rights organization challenging racism and reprisal in the federal workplace. Under her pen name, DeVonne has written Dancing in the Lyrics and Sipping Wine Over Rhymes. In Black Skin is a part of the author’s newest series of books that capture the spirit and challenges of black life in America in the context of race. The compilation of more than fifty poems creatively takes the reader on a journey using photographs, prose, quotes from noted Black American poets, references to historical events in America, and actual encounters the author experienced when confronting racial matters.
DeVonne is a member of the Maryland Writers’ Association (MWA) and Toastmasters International’s University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) Power Speakers club. A consummate lover of the creative word, she has been writing poetry for over thirty years. In January 2020, her poem “Salute to Federal Whistleblowers” appeared in Pen In Hand, MWA’s literary magazine. In Black Skin represents a merging of her two passions, namely civil rights and creative writing. In March 2021, DeVonne served as a keynote speaker during Women’s History Month for the Prince George’s County chapter of MWA. She discussed how to find your purpose through the power of the pen. She revealed how she overcame workplace discrimination and how writing became a cathartic outlet for her as she claimed victory over adversity. DeVonne earned a Bachelor of Science in business management from the University of Maryland and a Master of Science in human resources management from the University of Maryland University College.
