Wilbert Donald Gough was born on June 13, 1918, in Davidson, Oklahoma to Samuel E, and Edna Stafford Gough, the first of five children. Surviving diphtheria at age 6, he grew up in Graham Texas, accepting Jesus into his life at age 12 and baptized by Edwin B Stafford his grandfather, a preacher-pastor. After graduating from high school and earning a degree from Draughon’s Business College, he began working as a department store accountant until WWII motivated him to serve his country by joining the U.S. Navy. Assigned to the Philadelphia Naval Yard, he met, through church, Florence I. Arthur in Philadelphia. Their marriage resulted in a lifetime of serving God together.
While living in Philadelphia, Wilbert, employed by TastyKake, and Florence, employed by an accounting firm, became baccalaureate graduates of what is now Cairn University. Wilbert continued his pursuit of theology and pastoral knowledge by earning Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Theology from Eastern Baptist Seminary (now Palmer Seminary of Eastern University), Temple University, and Burton Seminary, and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Eastern.
Ordained by the Philadelphia Baptist Association, he pastored churches in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa, West Virginia, New Hampshire and Maine. He served on the Boards of Alderson-Broaddus College, the American Baptist Churches, and Detroit Baptist Manor (founding member), as well as serving as an Adjunct Professor of Bible at William Tyndale College in Michigan.
Wilbert and Florence had two children, W. Donald Gough, Jr., and Diane Elizabeth Fowler, six grandchildren, and eight greats. Wilbert went to be with his Lord on August 13, 2022, after living a Christ-filled life of 104 years!
