Reviews
On her first day at EnMotion Elementary School, Bridget Kimble takes in all the exciting and daunting firsts: riding the school bus, meeting her teacher and classmates, and discovering all the rules and expectations. When Ms. Widget tasks students with introducing themselves, Bridget can hardly contain her excitement as her turn approaches, but then a classmate cuts her off in his own eagerness. Young Bridget stands up for herself, letting her classmate know it was her time to speak, and Ms. Widget seizes this opportunity to teach a valuable lesson about self-control. Told through the voice of an eager young learner, Moore’s vibrant, upbeat debut offers a warm introduction to school rules, social interactions, and compassion toward peers.

Moore highlights the thrill and jitters of starting school, with an emphasis on the kind of seemingly small moment that can shake a new student. Ms. Widget exemplifies classroom management and situational diffusion tactics that are important for both students and teachers to learn. The story is vividly illustrated in a vibrant comic book style by Mick Edrick M. Marcellana: the cast are appealingly fuzzy and colorful anthropomorphized animals whose feelings shine through their deftly rendered facial expressions. (Bonus material outlining the process of creating the characters and the artwork is a showcase of the power of human-crafted art in the AI age.)

A pastel-pink bunny with an infectious smile, Moore's protagonist is strong-willed, empathic, and full of wonder, and the story builds excitement and joy around school, its rules, and the cultivation of bonds there. The text at times is wordy, lacking final-edit polish, especially when it comes to dialogue, which is haphazardly presented and punctuated. Still, Bridget Kimble Learns Self-Control is touchingly humane, its story as everyday relatable as its art is inventively fun. Teachers and parents can use Bridget's story to open the floor to conversations about classroom etiquette and social behaviors.

Takeaway: Appealing tale of the first day of school and healthy social interactions.

My motivation behind the book

In 2021 my daughter was about to start Pre-K. During that time, I thought about some of the challenges she might face going to school during COVID. I created the character Bridget Kimble and thought about some lessons I would like my kids to learn. I thought of many titles, and one really resonated with me, Bridget Kimble learns self-control. I wrote the story and initially worked with my brother to develop the character, Bridget. In 2023 I found an amazing illustrator who took the initial drawings of Bridget and made her into the character you see on the cover of the book. His vision took my words from black and white into color. And the rest is history.
