Day Sixteen
At first Moire's sleepwalking incidents don't faze her. She's never had them before, so surely they'll pass. But when she notices they keep happening at a specific time each month, she wonders if there's something more to her nightly wanderings. Thinking it might be hormonal, she goes to her doctor and receives a prescription for birth control. When her husband Neil, who works as a researcher at a fertility clinic, discovers them he overreacts, even though he's aware Moire doesn't want children. When Moire finds a sheet from Neil's clinic, she becomes worried he's tracking her cycle. Adding in the sleepwalking, Moire begins to wonder if something's mentally wrong with her. As further troubling events and coincidences plague Moire's sleeping and waking world, her paranoia mounts. Paranoia Neil insists is a clear sign that Moire needs help. Moire knows she needs to get a grip, that what she believes is too crazy to be true, but when people close to her start disappearing, she realizes she's in a fight for her mind, and her body, and that what's been happening is more disturbing than she could have imagined. In this book, Moire and her sister Shannon both find themselves faced with unwanted pregnancies. When they begin discussing ways to terminate their pregnancies, they find themselves in a high-security mental ward where they are kept until too far along in their terms to safely changes their fates. This puts Shannon's life in danger, while it traps Moire into her situation. Neil become overprotective, guarding her, and not allowing her out of his sight until the baby is born. Only after she accepts the truth of how (and why) she and Shannon became pregnant, does Moire wake up to the fact that she needs to get away from Neil and those he's working for.
