With disclosure, I've known the author (though from a distance) since around 1999. And though I know him pretty well-these poems surprised me--mostly in their honesty. Tragic. Hopeful. Selfless. Selffull. Personal.
Honestly moving both in the verse and in the letter form. Highly recommend.
Poetry is a reflection of the poet. Usually that reflection is in how the poet sees nature, the world, the oddities of life, and occasionally their inner thoughts. Rarely does a poet expose their heart and deep emotions. In this collection Militello rips open his chest and exposes not only his heart but thoughts and emotions most men would not express nor admit, even to themselves.
I read a lot of poetry and it is rare that at the last line I have to stop and take a breath and let my mind think of something besides Wow! This happened several times while reading poems that not only struck home but struck a nerve. Anyone, male or female, who has lost a love, been in love, or experienced unrequited love, will relate to these poems.
Written as prose poetry in the form of love letters, Militello shows his mastery of words and often surprises the reader with the direction of the poem.
I give this one five full stars and just end with WOW!
