"Alison Morton reimagines history in this alternative world creating a clever and vivid universe as a stage to set her Roma Nova thriller upon....and what a performance it is to. The attention to detail is on point and fills the plot with a rich tapestry of Roman history that blends seamlessly with a modern story. I was in awe of the world that was being shaped before my eyes.
The storyline grabbed my attention from the outset and threw me into this dazzling new world that twisted and changed in the blink of an eye and ensured that excitement was at the forefront of every turn of the page. The character line up was equally impressive, lead by a remarkable and resilient leading lady who commanded the stage well and steered the story successfully.
Inceptio is a clever creation that merges the old with the new in a seamless fashion. It is bold, brave and a complete success in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed my time immersed in Morton's reimagined world and II highly recommend this book."
"Imagine a last outpost of the Roman Empire existed to this day, in its own Roma Nova territory north of Italy. Karen's mother was from there and she's forced to flee there from the Eastern United States in this excellent and exciting crime thriller. I'd call it speculative fiction, or alternative history fiction, and it's superbly done. The Roma Novans even speak in Latin, no longer a dead language. If you want fast paced action, believable characters and everything you'd find in a crime thriller, you have it here. I didn't find the speculative aspect at all intrusive. It enhanced the story for me. I intend to read more."
"This is one of those books you could so easily miss, particularly if alternate history is not your genre, but you would be missing out on a real treat. It is ideal escapism, with the ingredients of history, mystery and romance expertly combined to form a well balanced and perfectly presented start to a promising series.”
"The plot and subplots are so gripping and exciting, they leave you reading into the early hours. I had to force myself to go to sleep, rather than read beyond 1.30am! The characters are varied, clever, and their roles are very well-researched.
Ms Morton has created a fascinating alternative world of political scheming, power grabs, and intimidation, but also focuses on family values and loyalty to your loved ones. Another convincing aspect is the friendships Carina forms with a range of characters from different backgrounds. She isn't judgmental, content to give others their chance. They know of her impetuousness, and accept it, but they also know she has their back."
