Money Matters A Novel
Brian Finney, author

Adult; General Fiction (including literary and historical); (Publish)

At once a painful coming-of-age novel, an exciting amateur sleuth tale and an intriguing narrative involving social issues (immigration and wealth disparity), Money Matters has mystery at its core. This emotionally charged debut novel is firmly embedded in Los Angeles culture over the 2010 mid-term election. Jenny, the 27-year-old inexperienced protagonist, faced with the tragic disappearance of a friend, is forced to take on financial tycoons, corrupt politicians and the treacherous Baja drug cartel in her search to uncover the truth. Jenny’s investigation takes her into the twilight world of undocumented immigrants, which leads her to seek the help of the handsome director of an immigrant rights organization to whom she is strongly attracted. But will the deadly enmity of the rich and powerful thwart her search and end her budding romance?

Money Matters, Brian Finney's sensational new novel of manners and mystery charts the social and political complexities of contemporary Southern California with a superb ear for dialogue and an experienced satirist's honed blade. The novel follows Jenny, an irresistible, funny and accidental detective as she finds herself unraveling the unexplained disappearance of a young woman she admires. As we follow her through a riveting mélange of political intrigue, drug cartels, immigration activism and the recurring umbrella of Total Surveillance--the company for which she briefly works--the darkness underlying the sun-drenched facades of Los Angeles begins to grow visible, and that darkness looks exactly like money. Don't miss this gripping and powerful novel of figures just like your own friends, all of them facing a culture's--and our own--shifting fault lines. - David St. John, award-winning author of The World's Body

In this timely immigration story taking place in West Los Angeles, Money Matters is a story about two sisters, Tricia and Jenny who are conflicted in every way from politics to money to men.   Tricia, the controlling sister, cannot seem to keep herself from offering Jenny advice in blunt terms, like exclaiming 'get real'. The writing is layered, beautiful and draws an emotional response from the reader. I was in tears at the end and I cannot say enough good things about this novel. It is incredibly smart, current, witty, lively and well-paced. - Aurora Roman, bookseller

Money Matters: A Novel by Brian Finney is a fast-paced novel with hints of crime and intrigue, a novel that explores cultural and political themes. The protagonist is twenty-seven-year-old Jenny, a young woman who works two part-time jobs but whose life is about to spiral out of control when she tries to find out why the girlfriend of her boss has just disappeared. Her boss is the affluent CEO of a mutual fund company, Todd. In seeking to learn more about the disappearance of Todd's last girlfriend, Jenny is pulled into a nightmare of the kind of power she never imagined: big money, connections to a cartel, and the immigration question against the backdrop of a vicious mid-term election. Is she prepared for what is about to happen next in her quest for answers, and can she resist the lure of money?

Money Matters: A Novel by Brian Finney has strong plot points, a powerful premise, and elaborately developed characters. Jenny is a simple techie girl working surveillance videos for an agency while doing part-time work for Todd, but her curiosity sets her on a path she never envisaged. Her character is strong and her hunger for truth can be very costly for her. The author explores the seamy side of politics and the power of dirty money in this tale. The writing is strong, a delight in itself. Relationships are well developed. I enjoyed the intrigue, the realism infused into the writing, and the sophisticated characters. Brian Finney's Money Matters is a book for readers looking for something engaging, well-paced and emotionally rich. -- Romuald Dzemo, author of You Can’t Be a Failure
