Fans of complex serial killer novels will find some unexpected developments in Brown’s series debut, set in New York City. Josh Ingram, a former FBI profiler, is pulled back into his former life when a brutal killer, dubbed O’Henry by the press because of the discovery of one of his victims outside a funeral home of that name, resurfaces. The murderer has left the severed head of a woman on a Central Park bench. Inside the head is a typed message that suggests O’Henry anticipated Josh would be on the scene, accompanying FBI agent Rachael Tanner. The note threatens the families of Rachel’s supervisor and the NYPD commissioner. The stakes rise after the murder of Josh’s best friend, Arthur, a timid book dealer who found a contract in a book jacket linking the current New York governor, William Elhert, to a 1945 acquisition of shares in a German company. The major reveal will surprise some genre devotees. (BookLife)
