If you’re looking for a way to picture yourself in a future, technologically advanced environment, look no further than Pacific State. Despite the fact that it is a futuristic novel, it is surprisingly easy to imagine, thanks to detailed descriptions that immerse you in the story. Additionally, the book leaves no room for boredom as it advances quickly and keeps the reader engaged with its intriguing world-building.

Pacific State is rife with iconic, well-timed lines. One of my favorite statements is made after an attack: ‘I love what we’ve done with the place.” Also, I especially loved the book’s cast of engaging people. One such character is Johnny Seven, who is wanted for a heroic act that leads to his being court-martialed and escaping his punishers.

A remarkable, exciting experience is provided by its clever blending of realistically presented future concepts, rebellious characters, and spine-chilling action. It got my heart racing, my creativity stimulated, and my intellect completely engaged, much like seeing one of the movies from the Mission: Impossible and The Matrix series. If you enjoy futuristic, fast-paced sci-fi with fascinating technological details, this book is for you.

In a dystopian Berlin, Owen Resler needs to fit in as a data fracker so he can leave memories of poverty in his past and maybe even make a change from the inside. Notorious mercenary Mia Warsaw has other ways of making an impact and takes on a job to eliminate an unscrupulous and sadistic business mogul. When Owen Resler once again finds himself in a desperate situation, Mia’s job offer means he has to choose between struggling once more to find his way on his own, or face a great deal of risk to try and bring about massive change.

‘Pacific State’ by Grant Price is book two of The Sundown Series and, although I haven’t read the first book, Reality Testing, I didn’t feel like I was missing out and think that you could read this series in any order as they have different main characters.

Owen is a complex character in an uncertain position, unsure of what to do in life in order to make the biggest difference. This uncertainty allows you to take in more of this dystopian world as Owen assesses each of his options and reflects on his past. The author does a great job of balancing all of the characters on a knife edge, with limited resources available and trusts betrayed for a higher price there’s plenty of tension as the action intensifies. The plot eases you in gradually, following Owen and Mia as their paths begin to cross. This again is a clever way to incorporate world-building and is another reason why I didn’t feel as though I was missing out by joining the story in book two.

There are also questions raised about the power of capitalism woven subtly into the narrative and a hint of change leaves the door open for future books. I think that ‘Pacific State’ is a quick and entertaining read. I think that fans of dystopian science fiction would enjoy this series and that and fans of the author and ‘Reality Testing’ will enjoy this second instalment.

Midwest Book Review

Grant Price's ability to craft a believable futuristic world in which characters move between their greatest hopes and desires and the reality of what their choices have evolved on a broader sale makes for a powerful story. It's supercharged with compelling confrontations, twists, and tactics that continually challenge the characters to step up to new perceptions and options.

The political impact of their personal visions and the contrast between individual experience and society-wide ramifications makes for a satisfying sci-fi cyberpunk story that embraces intrigue, rebellious natures, disasters, and redemption that arrives in unlikely forms and conditions.

Of special note are evocative futuristic descriptions that are especially vivid in their depiction of this landscape, in which technology comes to roost and perhaps die in the arms of humanity's revamp.Libraries and readers seeking near-future worlds that stand out for their feel of authenticity and doom will find Pacific State a winner.

Readers' Favorite (5 stars)

Pacific State is fast-paced and action-packed. There was never a dull moment with all the twists and turns. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I turned the pages as fast as I could. The characters were well-developed and authentic. Their background stories revealed their unique personalities. Mia is a strong and resilient woman. Her circumstances made her a tough person, but she still had a soft heart. Owen finds himself in a world where he is better off, but he is not at ease among his new so-called friends. The dynamic between Mia and Owen was interesting. The story is excellently written, and it exceeded my expectations by far. The ending is fitting after all the drama.
