Pitching to Giraffes follows a rambunctious college baseball team trying to learn from past mistakes, overcome an arrogant chief rival, and win a championship. Their well-meaning coach is a fish out of water attempting to corral their hijinks. They need leadership from their top pitcher, but John Light's engagement with baseball is weakened by his desire to actively participate in the counter-culture quest to demand a better world. A student activist with militant connections offers him the action he desperately seeks to legitimize his commitment, but at a cost. John grapples with the complications of losing oneself in a just cause. This warmhearted novel expands beyond baseball and explores the right thing to do and why we should do it. Through poetry, introspection, and a love of nature, John works out his own answers and finds a path forward, including an impassioned rebuttal to those who claim that without religion, morality is arbitrary and weak.
