I bought this book at a meet and greet at a store in Florida earlier this month, and I had a chance to talk briefly with its writer Adam Matthew Smith.
The book is called Shadows, and it's available for sale on Amazon as a paperback or ebook.
This dystopian superhero comic book is a great mix of classic and contemporary storytelling. Reading this, it reminded me a lot of certain X-Men stories in the way it tackles certain themes and ideas. This story tackles prejudice and the pursuit of power which aren't new concepts, but this book still manages to not feel tired in its execution. I really enjoyed the pacing and how it balanced brutal action with meaningful storytelling and development. There's one particular scene in the final half that I think is quite masterful, and you'll have to read it to see what I'm talking about.
The art by JC Grande is strong throughout, and his sequential storytelling is quite impressive at times. The character designs are fantastic, and I think readers will find at least one character to really latch onto. One of the lead characters, Kitsune, is a new favorite character of mine, and the rest of the cast is unique and fun in their own ways.
Overall, this is an enjoyable story that is self-contained but could easily span multiple stories. I'll definitely keep my eye out for any future developments since I definitely want to see more of these characters one day. If you can, I'd recommend reading this book and supporting these talented creators.
I had the splendid opportunity to be interviewed on live stream by ComicswithBueller at MegaCon 2023. Great start to a great Convention!
