Should've Been Dead

Adult; Memoir; (Market)

Sweta Patel wrote the life story of Rory Londer, a motivational speaker who would come speak to her students. He was stuck in a cycle of addiction to alcohol and crack cocaine for 17 years. He would spend nights staying warm in an old laundromat. Years later, he ended up buying that same laundromat and turned it into a million-dollar home improvement business. The book is structured around 12 life lessons that Sweta learned from Rory's journey. At its heart, it's a book about human connection and taking the time to meet people where they are.

Assessment:

Plot/Idea: Should've Been Dead is a powerful memoir that chronicles Rory Londer's road through addiction and devastation to victory and personal success. Told in tandem with educator Sweta Patel, the work broadens its focus and impact to focus on the hard lessons learned throughout Londer's active addiction and criminal acts–lessons that Patel applies in her classroom.

Prose: The prose is clear, readable, and remains dynamic, with vivid recollections of many of Londer's most uncomfortable and heartbreaking moments.

Originality: While memoirs of addiction and recovery are commonplace, Londer's narrative arc is especially moving and inspiring, as is the manner in which the work integrates Patel's perspectives on Londer's growth.

Character/Execution: While some of the lessons might be made more pronounced and the narrative may benefit from some organizational reshaping, Should've Been Dead excels through its candor and clear-eyed perspective on addiction, hardship–and the potential for all to become empowered.
