A few months after their arrival in Maryville, Indiana in the spring of 1841, John Edwin and Maude Worthington and their son Thomas con pious old Adam Gibson out of the title to a dark cabin near the Devil’s Dell. Emboldened by their success, the elder Worthingtons try to swindle the newly arrived and obviously wealthy John Murrow out of his money. Unknown to the Worthingtons, Black John is a slave trader, thief and murderer, and he is on the run from the law. The Worthingtons lure Murrow to the cabin. Murrow disappears. What happened?
