The Defense of the Commonwealth is set in the same universe as the author's Jonah Halberd series but roughly 350 years earlier. The book begins with the circumstances surrounding the formation of the Commonwealth and then moves on to begin telling the story of Perseverance Andrews, a woman who is one of the early heroes of the Commonwealth. Andrews is intelligent, capable and confident in nearly everything except love.
