The Snows of Nissa by Isabella Khalidi is an intense and spicy read, an adult fantasy for mature audiences. The varied characters feature tough female heroines and dark, dangerous men. There are instances of gender abuse, explicit sex, and violent scenes. The story closely examines how people manipulate others to get what they want, so far as to try to change a person into something they aren’t. It also pays attention to the notion that one partner in a relationship can view the other as their possession, becoming abusive in their belief that the other cannot have their own will. It will be interesting to see how the intricate relationships develop and play out during the series.
The Snows of Nissa is the first book in a new fantasy series that is part Game of Thrones, part A Court of Thorns and Roses.
The Snows of Nissa also endeared itself to me as a book that seeks to highlight the many ways in which a woman can be taken advantage of by a man in power. Duna is not what many readers might instinctively think of as a victim, but despite her efforts not to be trampled on by the males around her, even she is unable to escape the possessive, greedy clutches of lust that some men live by. As she becomes more isolated in the White City, she is more susceptible to the abuse and rage of the prince who seeks to own her. Then, even when it seems like she might have escaped a life imprisoned as the reluctant wife of a sadistic royal, she finds herself about to be trapped into being possessed by yet another ruler from a different kingdom.
The Snows of Nissa portrays female sexuality without shame. It presents different female characters who possess their own unique powers be it through their positions as members of a royal family or palace, being unafraid and unashamed of her sexual desires, or realizing that it is okay to be both tough and hard, yet feel strong emotions and yearn for the presence of another.
I am thoroughly excited to see where this story goes next and will be waiting impatiently for follow-up to The Snows of Nissa.
