The Greek gods are back and more malevolent than ever following an apocalypse that nearly wiped out humankind. Every year, they force a select group of sixteen-year-olds to undergo the Trials, a mortal challenge modeled after Odysseus’ ordeals. The unwanted prize of winning is years of forced servitude to the immortals. Some prefer death. Blind Fenn wants to help his brother avoid this fate. Only, he’s been in hiding all his life, because the gods think “defectives” like him should be euthanized at birth. Rennie wants to help her sister too, especially after she sees the lust in the god Ares’ eyes as he watches her. But she has a lot on her hands tracking down a mysterious medallion that the gods are anxious to get back. Asterios, a highly intelligent horned horse, is fed up with his immortal masters after Zeus initiates the death of his daughter and disappearance of his newborn grandson. The three of them would like nothing more than to bring down the immortal reign. But without unearthing the true nature and origins of these gods, they haven’t a chance in Hades.
