Thinly Veiled by Eliza Modiste has written a suspenseful romance that holds its own. The story is well-written and keeps you reading, wanting to know how it all ends. As you read through the story, you go through a lot of different emotions as the character does. The characters are well-written and have difficulties in their relationship, which keeps the story moving forward. Modiste writes the scenes well and you can see all the scenes in your mind as you read the story. The plot twists make the story better and the quirkiness keeps the reader on their toes. This story is a splendid book for anyone to read and will enjoy. I recommend this for anyone that loves romance with some suspense mixed in.
Claire Branson needed a change from her past criminal activity and overbearing boyfriend, but she wasn’t going to get what she needed until she cut the ties that bind and moved across state lines. What she wants and needs are routine and a fresh start in her life. Luke Turner is simple—sexy, sarcastically sweet, and, above all, radiating innocence. He could be her simplicity, there’s no doubt about that, but she can’t bring herself to open up to him until the past catches up with her and she has no choice. Things get hairy and it's a toss-up whether she and Luke will live or die.
I haven’t read a lot of romance novels because the authors tend to avoid walking on the wild side, that is to say, the love affairs and sexual scenes are more innuendo and gloss than reality. So, I was pleasantly surprised to read how Eliza Modiste put the punch where it belonged... and pulled no punches or words in describing not only the true-to-life love affair of Luke and Claire but also the nuts and bolts of a dangerous situation festering beneath the surface that ultimately creates a true to form suspense novel. Not to be ignored are supporting characters that are equally relatable as people most readers can associate with in real life. In summation, Thinly Veiled by Eliza Modiste is a love affair with explicit, true-to-life characterizations and situations, and a page-turning suspense story. Readers will be hard-pressed to put the book down for food, sleep, or work.
